The advancement of fleet tracking systems has enabled more control over fleet operations by providing vehicle location, driver behaviour insight and job management data. But to get the most out of this technology, it is important that businesses choose a platform that aligns with their specific needs.

When picking a tracking system, it is important to think about the following:

  • Set business objectives: Why is your business considering a fleet tracking system? What does your company want to achieve? It could be, for example, an improvement in fuel efficiency, to reduce the number of accidents or just to monitor the location of drivers. There are many GPS tracking benefits, but management won’t see them if they don’t have a clear understand of what they want to achieve.

  • Consider long-term business goals: What plans does your company have for expansion? We advise that the benefits of telematics are not just viewed in the short term. Management must look at the bigger picture and try to identify where any new technology can benefit the company throughout the coming years.

  • Involve other departments in the process: We can’t advocate this enough. Good communication is the cornerstone of any successful company, so consult various departments within your business to find out how fleet data may be able to help them with their goals. An example of this could the financial department; providing feedback and reporting on mileage and expense claim, or producing invoices and quotes for customers, might make life easier for them too. The HR department could possibly also benefit from vehicle analytics and performance reports as these show them how much time drivers are spending behind the wheel.

Implementation and staff training

After agreeing on a tracking system, the next priority is to establish training. It’s important that drivers are informed just why the new systems are being implemented as some may see it as an intrusion. You can read more about how to introduce vehicle tracking to your staff by clicking here.

We find that customers who set aside a morning, or a few hours, to train each department on how to use it see the best results. As mentioned previously, it’s always best to get this kind of training done as soon as possible so that everyone can hit the ground running.
